200 cherry trees

To commemorate the goodwill and friendship existing between

the Japanese and New Zealand people

and on the occasion of the visit to Wellington of the floating fair 'TS vessel 'Shin Sakura"

20 September 1978

Presented to the City of Wellington, the Wellington Chamber of Commerce

and Wellington Manufacturers Federation

From the Japan Industry Floating Fair Association Tokyo,

the Embassy of Japan,

the Japanese Businessmen's Society, Wellington


200 cherry trees planted at various sites within the Botanic Garden and the City Gardens. The plaque is situated at the base of a cherry tree by the Peace Garden in the Lady Norwood Rose Garden


Many of the 200 original trees no longer exist due to disease (silver leaf and witches broom) and some vandalism, although a number remain throughout the Garden
